Crackdown on Alcohol in the Red River Gorge
by Jim Stickley, post date May 15, 2008

There is a new law enforcement officer in the Gorge who is, well, enforcing the law. His name is Allen Neal. Ranger Neal, who is on detail to the Gorge this summer, has a strict no-alcohol policy, and has been giving tickets to people for having beer in their campsites.

The law against possessing or consuming alcoholic beverages in a National Forest is not a new law. Enforcing the law is usually left to the discretion of the Rangers on duty. Typically, our USFS Rangers evaluate each encounter separately. They precariously balance visitor enjoyment, safety, and impact.

Allen Neal's strict interpretation of the law has spawned a wide spectrum of opinions. What's yours? Join our forum and let us know what you think!
