Kids Fishing Derby
The inspiration and the rewards
STANTON, Ky., July 8, 2008 - The annual Kids Fishing Derby is now history, and what a stunning history it was. More than a hundred young people registered for a morning of learning and fishing fun up in the Indian Creek area of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
Hundreds of trout were stocked into Indian Creek for the young anglers on June 7. The kids used corn, meal worms, flies, bobbers and hooks, and several unknown rigs to catch the fish. And catch, they did. Many stringers were full with a limit catch. Fish sizes ranged from eight inches to a whopping 14 inches. Not bad for "just kids."
Several important survival skills were demonstrated: how to tie knots, how to recognize game fish, how to cast, and how important clean water is. Many of the parents even learned some things.
The event was for girls and boys, ages 5-15 years. One hundred and eleven kids registered for participation. Children came from as far away as Ohio, but most came from right here in Kentucky.
The morning was topped off with prizes given to all the young people who participated. Special recognition goes to all the extremely generous sponsors and donors of fishing equipment, food and camping supplies.
The Forest Service will sponsor another Kids Fishing Derby in June next year. Be sure to watch for announcements.
