The Red River Gorge is a unique area of the Daniel Boone National Forest
that is designated as a National Natural Landmark. Located in eastern-central Kentucky, within the sandstone belt of the Pottsville Escarpment,
this area has been beautifully sculpted by millions of years of wind and water erosion.
Today, the Red River Gorge is a popular place for hiking, exploring, camping, and climbing. Yet despite the popularity, you can
easily find yourself in the solitude of nature, given 29,000 acres of spectacular cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, caves,
swimming holes, and over 100 natural arches.
The Gladie Cultural-Environmental Learning Center
, located at the Gladie Historic Site on KY 715, provides Red River Gorge information, maps, and educational
opportunities. The Center's hours are now 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

RED RIVER, the Movie: Gore in the Gorge
by Jim Stickley, Post Date: Nov. 29, 2009
The Red River Gorge has long been known as both beautiful and deadly, but native Kentuckian Jacob Ennis is taking the deadly aspect along a different
trail in his upcoming movie RED RIVER.
The movie, now in postproduction and expected to be released in 2010, is far from a documentary about people falling off cliffs or drowning in the river.
RED RIVER is a straight up blood and guts gore film. "I have always been a fan of backroads type horror films and with me living in Kentucky, I guess
it's just a perfect fit" says Ennis.
“This movie is packed with nonstop bloodshed. Just a few of the effects you will see is a full on shot of a boob being cut off. A garden tiller to the
stomach, several decapitations, Toe Slaw, Boobie Bean Soup, eye gouging, leg breaking, impaling, head smashing, to name a few.
I can't say enough good things about our makeup team."
RED RIVER is based around the character ROLAND THATCHER. The Thatchers have always had a reputation of being odd and kept to themselves most of the time.
The only time you would see the Thatchers would be if one of them came into town to buy supplies or for Roland Thatcher to sell his prize Blood Mill
fertilizer to the town folk.
Roland also has a side business where he grows and sells Marijuana. He grows some of the finest, fertilized by the blood and flesh of unlucky Red River
campers. What's left over he feeds to (deleted spoiler).
Not all of the footage was shot in the Gorge. Roland's house is a real abandoned house in Ennis' hometown, Greensburg, Ky.
Ennis recalls, "We would drive out to that house as teenagers and do things we were not supposed to do and get really freaked out while we were out there. There were
animal bones made into an arch and the road was lined with wooden crosses."
Directed and written by Jacob Ennis and co-written by Gregory Brock, RED RIVER is funded by Camp Motion Pictures/Bloody Earth Films and is executive
produced by Alternative Cinema President Michael Raso. The snakes in the movie were provided by, of course, the Kentucky Reptile Zoo in Slade.
