Cave Closure 2010

Postby Jim Stickley » Wed Jan 06, 2010 11:05 pm

The caves in the Red River Gorge and on the Daniel Boone National Forest remain closed as we head into the new year, with no hint of when they may re-open. Research into what is causing White-Nosed Syndrome (WNS) that has plagued bats continues. On February 18-19, 2010, the Southeast Bat Diversity Network will hold their Annual Meeting in Asheville, NC.

For now, the most up-to-date info on WNS research and advances can be found here:

Researchers stumped trying to solve bat disease

Here's an informative article about the progress (rather the lack of progress) with WNS research, published June 6, 2010:

This cave ban drives me crazy...it is somewhat typical though. The only people who honor the ban are the ones who care the most about the habitat...many others simply ignore the signs and take the risk.
