WINCHESTER, Ky., June 15, 2009

Beginning Monday, June 22, the Indian Creek Road in Menifee County, Forest Service Road #9 in the Red River Gorge, will be closed for construction. The closure is expected to span over a period of at least 90 days as contractors remove and reconstruct a bridge over the East Fork of Indian Creek. During this time, the road will be closed to vehicle traffic in the interest of public safety.

“We realize this road leads to a popular area of the gorge where many visitors enjoy fishing, hiking and rock climbing,” said Dave Manner, District Ranger of the Cumberland Ranger District, “but the bridge repairs are necessary to improve travel in this area.”

The construction project will replace an existing steel bridge with timber decking that was built in 1954. Over the years, this bridge has become deficient and unsafe for large road maintenance equipment and fish stocking vehicles. The existing bridge will be replaced with a single span steel girder structure with concrete decking. The new bridge will provide safe access for the public and support road maintenance activities, as well as future stream and fish habitat restoration projects.

Recreational visitors in the Indian Creek area are encouraged to use caution during the construction project and to avoid the immediate vicinity where heavy equipment will be operating. For more information, contact the Cumberland Ranger District office at 606-784-6428 or the Gladie Learning Center at (606) 663-8100.

This really hurts our plans Jim.
Now we will be scrambling for a new plan
come September.

Yesterday, spoke with Gene Baker, USFS, an administrator
involved with the Indian Creek Bridge Construction. After
checking with the Construction Crew he said that under the
best possible conditions the Bridge could be finished and
FS Road 9 reopened after September 20th. That's the very
"Best" possible conditions.

He personally feels that the whole project will not be
completed until early October which is just in keeping
with the pre-established timeframe.

Indian Creek Bridge Final Photos

We wrap-up our 3 month long observation
of the Indian Creek Bridge Construction with
our Final installment.
An 'extensive' look at the Bridge just hours
after its completion [17th] and then once more
days later [22nd] for its Last Inspection, Public
Opening & Crossing.

In order to complete this task we wanted to thank
some folks: [could not have done it without them]

Gene Baker
Scott Bonds
Mark Johnson
Kimberly Morgan
Ed Newell
Jessica Santangelo
J.R. Wagers
Rita Wehner

There are 3 pages charting the progress of
the construction. From Final Form to Beginning:

It has been interesting, educational and historic
